Highlights for Agave Productivity

ثبت نشده
چکیده

Agaves can grow in marginal arid and semiarid lands where their special ecological and physiological adaptations to environmental conditions give them the potential to produce substantial biomass. Agave americana was the first agave species shown to be a Crassulacean Acid Metabolism plant, with CO2 uptake occurring primarily at night and with high wateruse efficiency (photosynthesis/transpiration). A. salmiana and A. mapisaga can have high nocturnal net CO2 uptake rates and high productivities averaging 40 tonnes dry weight ha 1 yr . Agaves can benefit from the increases in temperature and atmospheric CO2 levels accompanying global climate change. An Environmental Productivity Index can predict the effects of soil and environmental factors on CO2 uptake and hence on the regions appropriate for cultivating agaves. In turn, their increased cultivation can support the production of innovative earth-friendly commodities that can be used as new bioenergy feedstocks.

Chemical composition and characterization of cellulose for Agave as a fast- growing, drought-tolerant biofuels feedstock

A major issue raised about development of cellulosic biomass derived fuels technologies is the concern about possible competition for land with agricultural crops and impacts on food and feed supply. However, because agave offers high productivity with low water and nutrient demands, it can thrive on semiarid lands not suitable for conventional agriculture, making it a promising lignocellulosic...

The Effect Of Using Stevia And Agave Nectar as a Substitute For Sucrose On Physical, Chemical, Rheological, And Sensory Properties Of Dark Chocolate

Despite of the fact that the use of sweeteners as sugar substitute in food products is effective in reduction of calories and related diseases, they are typically associated with change in the texture and sensory properties of the product. In the present study, the effect of partial and overall replacement of sucrose with agave nectar and stevia on chemical, physical, rheological, and sensory p...

Utilization of byproducts from the tequila industry: part 1: agave bagasse as a raw material for animal feeding and fiberboard production.

Agave bagasse was successfully separated into fractions that were used in sheep feeding trials. Agave bagasse can be substituted for corn stubble in the sheep's diet which resulted in improved weight gain. Agave bagasse was also processed into long and short fiber fractions with a hammermill and fiberboards of medium and high specific gravities being produced. Medium specific gravity agave fibe...

Agave proves to be a low recalcitrant lignocellulosic feedstock for biofuels production on semi-arid lands

BACKGROUND Agave, which is well known for tequila and other liquor production in Mexico, has recently gained attention because of its attractive potential to launch sustainable bioenergy feedstock solutions for semi-arid and arid lands. It was previously found that agave cell walls contain low lignin and relatively diverse non-cellulosic polysaccharides, suggesting unique recalcitrant features ...

The global potential for Agave as a biofuel feedstock

Large areas of the tropics and subtropics are too arid or degraded to support food crops, but Agave species may be suitable for biofuel production in these regions. We review the potential of Agave species as biofuel feedstocks in the context of ecophysiology, agronomy, and land availability for this genus globally. Reported dry biomass yields of Agave spp., when annualized, range from o1 to 34...
